Matiti: Hua Parakore Wine and Beverage Collective

Kia hora te marino, kia whakapapa pounamu te moana, kia tere te karohirohi i mua i tou huarahi.

May the calm be widespread, may the surface of the ocean glisten like the greenstone and may the shimmer of the summer dance across your path.

Ko wai mātou? | Who Are We?

The Matiti Collective are a group of wāhine Māori organic winemakers (Jannine Rickards and Richelle Tiney), hua parakore verified growers and kaupapa Māori storytellers (Jessica Hutchings, Mariana Te Rangi and Jo Smith) and a tea and beverage expert (Timmy Smith). We are dedicated to establishing and supporting kaupapa Māori pathways for wine and beverage production. Matiti takes its name from the seven phases of summer when the art of wine making occurs. Drawing on the Hua Parakore (Māori Organics) framework for producing Kai Atua (pure food), Matiti produce wine, tea, and sparkling non-alcoholic drinks that reconnect tangata back to whenua, awa and oneone (soil).

Ngā whainga | Our Aims and Objectives

Wine and beverage making are processes and products that engage the senses, draw from the energies and wisdom of Te Ao Tūroa and function to help bind communities together. Māori are under-represented in the wine and beverage sector and Matiti aims to change this.

We develop understandings of wine and beverage production from  the viewpoint of te ao Māori so that we can restore and deepen connections to mātauranga Māori, amplify Māori in winemaking and encourage greater Māori uptake of organic food and beverage practices that uplift mana whenua aspirations.

We also partner with non-Indigenous wine growers to help strengthen understandings of the cultural context out of which wine making occurs in settler colonial countries such as Aotearoa. Our wine and beverage products aim to encourage consumers to connect and care, respect and protect our relationships with the natural world and one another.

Hua Parakore | Māori Organics

Our products are proudly Hua Parakore verified under the korowai of Papawhakaritorito, which is a Hua Parakore farm on the lands of Te Ati Awa in Whanganui-a Tara. All of the ingredients in our products are both certified organic and Hua Parakore. Hua Parakore is a Māori organics verification system run by Te Waka Kai Ora and upholds six kaupapa, mana, wairua, whakapapa, Te Ao Tūroa, māramatanga and mauri. Hua Parakore is a pathway to decolonising our collective food futures in Aotearoa and restoring collective Indigenous foodways.
